One of the truly rare qualities of the Vocal Studies area at the University of Delaware is its thriving resident opera company, UD Opera Theatre, one of America's most progressive and engaging collegiate opera companies! UD Opera Theatre, under the Artistic Direction of Dr. D. Blake Smith and Music Direction of Dr. James Allen Anderson, produces at least two fully-staged productions each year with orchestra in the original language, a feat unique among Vocal Studies programs of similar size. Moreover, UD Opera Theatre is the only collegiate opera company in America with a contemporary chamber opera series, known as OPERA:NOW. The fall OPERA:NOW production is typically followed by a more tradiational Mainstage opera in the spring. Previous repertoire includes Puccini's La boheme, Verdi' Falstaff, Strauss II's Die Fledermaus, Britten's Albert Herring and The Rape of Lucretia, and all three of the Mozart-da Ponte collaborations (Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, and Cosi fan tutte).
In addition to these productions, UD Opera Theatre also sponsors a two-semester Opera Workshop sequence, the first semester focusing on basic acting fundamentals for singers and expressiveness in solo singing and the second semester introduces group work and culminates in presentation of operatic scenes. The Opera Workshop is under the direction of Dr. Isai Jess Muñoz.
